1. 01

   The Fort Worth Gothic Emergence

   Leaving Lubbock behind, Shahan hit Fort Worth and partnered up with producer and guitarist Elijah Ford to track Men & Coyotes in 2015. Released on Magnolia Records, the debut leaned away from standard honky-tonk polish, building around Matthew Smith's stark drumming and Grant Jackson Wilborn's raw mix. You hear it immediately on tracks like the title cut and 'Revolution,' where Texas country gets dragged into pitch-black, rock-informed character studies.

2. 02

   Widening the Scope

   A distribution pact with Thirty Tigers and his own 7013 Records imprint gave Shahan the runway to blow out his sound on 2018's Culberson County. Elijah Ford returned behind the board, this time bringing in Daniel Sproul to cut blistering lead guitar across an expanded canvas of gospel backing vocals and thick blues rock. Between co-writes with Brent Cobb and Aaron Raitiere and vocal spots from Bonnie Bishop, the record documented an artist violently outgrowing regional limits without losing his West Texas bite.

3. 03

   The Muscle Shoals Soul Shift

   Keeping Marc Ford at the helm, Shahan packed up the operation and cut 2024's Loose Funky Texas Junky at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Ditching screaming lead guitar solos entirely, the band leaned hard into vintage Southern R&B, driven by rolling piano and heavy organ vamps across a joint release between Lemon Pepper, Deep Roots, and Make Wake Records. It captured Shahan operating purely on groove, proving his gravel throat could handle greasy deep-south funk just as easily as highway laments.

Influences

• Guy Clark — Shahan has constantly cited Clark as the primary gold standard for narrative discipline and economy of language. You hear it in how Shahan frames working-class decay on Culberson County without preaching or spilling unnecessary adjectives. Clark taught every Texas writer that an honest description of a ditch beats three verses of sentiment.
• Townes Van Zandt — The West Texas windburn and stark fatalism in Shahan's lyricism trace directly back to Van Zandt's catalog of desperate men and hard luck. The acoustic bones of Men & Coyotes echo Townes' habit of viewing the Texas landscape as an indifferent predator. It's the refusal to provide neat, happy endings that betrays the lineage.
• Billy Joe Shaver — Shaver forged the blueprint for blending raw rural bravado with unapologetic, bone-bruising rock rhythm sections. Shahan channels Shaver's tough-guy vulnerability and unvarnished vocal delivery on punchier cuts like 'Revolution.' It is outsider country that refuses to ask for permission from the radio.
• The Black Crowes — Shahan loved the Southern rock swagger of the Robinson brothers enough to literally hire their former lead guitarist Marc Ford to produce Javelina and Loose Funky Texas Junky. The swaggering, swampy riff structures and soul backing vocals on those records draw a straight line to The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. It keeps his Texas country from sounding like a museum piece.
• Terry Allen — Coming up in the Lubbock orbit means living in the shadow of Allen's weird, dry, Panhandle-drenched storytelling. You hear Allen's skewed, dust-caked perspective on Texas characters throughout Shahan's catalog, especially when he writes about small-town lunatics and desolate open roads. It's Panhandle music made by someone who actually breathed the dirt.
