Biography

Belgian guitarist/composer (experimental)
Runs record label Aspen Edities
Ruben Machtelinckx is a Belgian guitarist and composer at active in the European improvised and experimental music scene.
Known for his meticulous, genre-agnostic approach, his work explores the intersection of sound, texture, and form with a quiet intensity that rewards deep listening.
From early on, Machtelinckx has pursued a path shaped by personal vision, cultivating a deeply individual musical language. He has released over ten albums as a bandleader, collaborating with a diverse array of forward-thinking artists including Arve Henriksen, Ingar Zach, Nils Økland, Hilmar Jensson, Joachim Badenhorst, Frederik Leroux, Toma Gouband, Øyvind Skarbø, Fredrik Rasten and Evan Parker.
His early work drew on folk traditions and lyrical melodies, but over time his music has shifted toward a more exploratory and textural terrain. While improvisation remains a central element, it now serves subtler purposes—often woven into intricate structures marked by restraint, harmonic ambiguity, and a quiet friction that reveals itself slowly.
In 2017, Machtelinckx founded Aspen Edities, an independent label for contemporary music. The imprint reflects his wide-ranging curiosity, releasing work that blends composed and improvised material, often blurring the boundaries between the two.
