Biography
American cabaret singer & songwriter known for her "saucy" songs in the 1940s-60s.
Born January 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Died December 22, 2007 (age of 87) in Killingly, Connecticut, USA.
Wife of songwriter (aka Hy Pastman).
Ruth Wallis was known as the "Queen of the party song for the genteelly risqué" & "the high priestess of the double entendre" and "Queen of the wicked ditties." She wrote most of her own songs, approximately 120 in total. ASCAP IPI #127203116.
The first novelty record by the quintessential singer of risqué songs was released in 1948, and she continued to release 45s and 78s under her own name. The (partly owned by her & her husband Pastman) later issued 10" LP collections and listed an address of Linden, New Jersey. By the time of the 12" LP reissues, this had changed to Miami Beach, Florida, presumably Ms. Wallis' own postal address. Manufacturing services were contracted from Crown of Pennsylvania. Albums were produced roughly at every year's end at least until the material was taken over and reissued again by King. New albums in her later career include a live one for King and one on Mercury.
Some of her most famous songs were collected and became the Off-Broadway hit, "Boobs! The Musical: The World According to Ruth Wallis". "Boobs!" opened at the Triad Theater in New York City on May 19, 2003; by closing date it had played nearly 300 performances.
