Biography

US poet and black studies academic associated with the Black Arts Movement. Born on 1928-01-20 in Nashville, Tennessee to Thomas Webster and Mayme Louise Storey Webster. Married Cyril Fabio in 1946; divorced him in 1972. Died on 1979-11-07 from colon cancer, aged 51. Mother of 5 children, born in 1947, 1948, 1949, 1954 & 1956. Her daughter had filmed a documentary about her in 1976 titled Rainbow Black: Poet Sarah W. Fabio.
Webster Fabio is credited with helping to introduce the Black Arts Movement to Bay Area colleges in California. Following her tenure at Merritt College, she held positions at California College Of Arts And Crafts and the University Of California, Berkeley between 1968 and 1971. At both of those institutions she is credited with helping to establish the first Black studies departments, which has led to her being named Mother of Black Studies.
