Biography

Georg Neuhauser doesn't sing like a guy fronting a heavy metal outfit; he tracks like a conservatory tenor who wandered into a room full of cranked Engl stacks. Austria was never a hotbed for symphonic power metal, but after grinding through demos like 'Starseed V.R.' and 'Engraved Within', they stopped trying to chase standard European speed. They went all-in on bombast, double-kick gallops, and obsessively researched historical concept records. The real turning point was Thomas Buchberger's riff style colliding with Neuhauser's Broadway-tier phrasing. They hit a wall around 2013 when they tried pushing a dual-vocal dynamic with Clémentine Delauney on 'War of Ages', only to immediately reverse course when she walked. The detour almost turned them into a cookie-cutter gothic act. They survived it by stripping out the guest bloat, leaning harder into cinematic orchestration, and doubling down on sheer theatrical momentum.

The Arc of Serenity

The pivots — what forced Serenity to reinvent.

  1. The Progressive Demo Grind

From 'Starseed V.R.' through 'Engraved Within', the Tyrolean outfit was still figuring out their identity. Buchberger's guitars were chasing technical progressive metal tempos while Neuhauser's vocals leaned heavily toward clean European melodic phrasing. You hear a band fighting their own technical impulses before realizing that big hooks and historical themes worked better than polyrhythmic wankery.

  2. The Historical Concept Run

By the time 'Death & Legacy' landed in 2011, Serenity locked into their signature lane of high-concept, history-obsessed symphonic metal. They quit writing generic fantasy tracks and started structuring entire albums around Galileo, Casanova, and historical bloodshed. Neuhauser's vocal delivery shifted into pure theater, backed by dense choir tracking and Buchberger's sharpest, most polished guitar production.

  3. The Co-Vocal Experiment

Bringing in French vocalist Clémentine Delauney for 2013's 'War of Ages' was an explicit swing at the male-female symphonic metal playbook. The interplay altered the entire songwriting formula, pulling them away from aggressive double-bass charges into lush, mid-tempo theatrical duets. The experiment was short-lived when Delauney exited, forcing the core band to rethink their reliance on outside counterweights.

  4. Refocused Theatrics

Bouncing back with 'Codex Atlanticus' and 'Lionheart', Serenity reclaimed their space as an unapologetic, front-and-center vehicle for Neuhauser's soaring range. The additions of Cris Tían and drummer Johannes Jungreithmeier tightened the low end and brought back the galloping speed. The arrangements on 'Nemesis AD' dropped any remaining identity crisis, trading guest-star dependence for pure symphonic power.

Influences

  • Kamelot — Roy Khan-era Kamelot provided the exact blueprint for Serenity's dramatic, mid-tempo symphonic songwriting. You hear it across 'Words Untold & Dreams Unlived' in the theatrical vibrato and the blend of strings with progressive power metal riffs. Neuhauser has repeatedly cited them as the benchmark for how to front a symphonic band.
  • Sonata Arctica — Tony Kakko's early up-tempo melodic structures directly shaped the keyboard-driven sprints on Serenity's early cuts like 'Engraved Within'. The double-bass verses exploding into massive, choir-backed choruses are straight out of the classic Finnish power metal playbook. It taught them how to keep the energy blistering without losing the vocal melody.
  • Symphony X — Michael Romeo's neoclassical crunch heavily informed Thomas Buchberger's rhythm playing and sweeping solos. Listen to the intricate riffing on 'Fallen Sanctuary' and you can pinpoint Romeo's tight, staccato picking style all over the record. They took the American prog-metal muscle and smoothed it out for European ears.
  • Blind Guardian — Hansi Kürsch's massive, multi-tracked vocal walls laid the groundwork for how Serenity stacks Neuhauser's harmonies. Tracks on 'Death & Legacy' rely on huge, layered gang choirs that mirror the epic grandeur Blind Guardian pioneered in the nineties. It gives the historical storytelling real sonic weight.
  • Queen — Freddie Mercury's theatrical phrasing and operatic rock delivery are Neuhauser's primary vocal foundation. The operatic interludes and unapologetic melodrama on 'The Last Knight' pull directly from Queen's vocal arrangements. Without that classic rock pomp, Serenity would just be another run-of-the-mill Euro-power band.
