German composer (born June 11, 1864, in Munich, died September 8, 1949, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen). He was a leading figure of the late Romantic and early Modern era. Strauss is best known for his composition 'Also sprach Zarathustra', 'An Alpine Symphony' and the operas 'Salome' and 'Elektra'.
His father was the musician Franz Strauss.
