Biography
Bang Chan built the initial tracks on an underpowered laptop inside a JYP basement studio, bypassing the usual corporate bullpen of Scandinavian hired-gun producers. Stray Kids didn't run off label-assigned demos. Chan, Changbin, and Han locked themselves in rooms under the moniker 3RACHA and handled the writing, tracking, and arrangements internally from day one. That self-contained control gave their early cuts a harsh, cluttered bite that sounded entirely indifferent to standard pop radio polish. They caught flak early for being abrasive noise-merchants, but lean into hard-edged industrial synth lines and rapid-fire rap cadences anyway. When Woojin exited in late 2019, the group stripped back to eight members, doubled down on heavy bass drops, and turned their kitchen-sink production style into an arena-filling formula. They occasionally overcook the arrangement, burying great vocal hooks under sheer volume, but the DIY production ethos keeps the core sound raw.

The Arc of Stray Kids
The pivots — what forced Stray Kids to reinvent.
The 3RACHA Blueprint
Between the pre-debut Mixtape and the 'I am' mini-album run in 2018, 3RACHA established a strict in-house writing regime uncommon for major-label outfits. Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han took ownership of the board, churning out aggressive, hip-hop-heavy drafts that leaned into angsty youth themes. The resulting tracks on 'I am NOT' and 'I am WHO' favored raw 808s, rapid delivery, and industrial textures over radio-friendly pop tropes. It set the precedent that nobody outside the core lineup was dictating the group's sonic direction.
The Mala-Taste Pivot
After Woojin departed in late 2019, the group regrouped and released their debut studio full-length 'GO生' in 2020. They embraced an abrasive, self-labeled 'mala taste' aesthetic with lead single 'God\'s Menu', built around metallic percussion hits and kitchen knives slicing into the beat. The record dropped polite vocal harmonies in favor of Felix's sub-bass vocal drops and syncopated trap rhythms. It marked the moment they stopped apologizing for being loud and leaned entirely into maximalist sound design.
Global Arena Maximalism
Winning Mnet's 'Kingdom' in 2021 launched them straight into the massive chart runs of 'NOEASY', 'ODDINARY', and '★★★★★' (5-STAR). With global stadium tours locked in, the production expanded into stadium-grade electro-house, rock crossovers, and international collaborations with guys like Tom Morello. The arrangements grew denser, trading some of the early DIY scrap for polished, high-decibel arena bombast. Even with corporate stakes peaking, 3RACHA kept the engineering reins firmly in their own hands.
Influences
- BIGBANG — Bang Chan and Han have repeatedly cited G-Dragon's self-producing idol blueprint as their primary operational guide. You hear it in the heavy hip-hop vocal arrangements and the alternating high-low rap dynamic between Han and Changbin. They inherited the idea that the guys singing the hooks should be the ones operating the DAW.
- 2PM — As senior labelmates at JYP, 2PM paved the way for intense, acrobatics-heavy choreography set to hard-driving club beats. You can hear their aggressive, bass-heavy approach in Stray Kids's early pre-debut tracks like 'Hellevator'. It provided the physical performance template the group built on.
- Eminem — Changbin and Han explicitly name-checked the Detroit rapper's machine-gun cadence and internal rhyme schemes in early training interviews. That rapid-fire, syllabic bite shows up across heavy verse trades on tracks like 'MIROH' and 'Thunderous'. It gave their rap line a distinct technical edge over traditional sing-song verse delivery.
- Epik High — Tablo and DJ Tukcut proved in the 2000s that a self-contained Korean hip-hop crew could control their own masters and still dominate charts. 3RACHA's whole philosophy of writing, recording, and sequencing in-house without outside intervention directly mirrors Epik High's working model. You hear the lyrical introspectiveness on b-sides like 'Voices' and 'Chronosaurus'.
- Skrillex — The mid-2010s brostep and aggressive EDM wave directly informed Bang Chan's synthesizer programming and drop construction. Tracks like 'Side Effects' and 'Maniac' rely entirely on distorted, metallic bass wobbles and harsh risers pulled straight from peak American dubstep. It provides the abrasive, digital grit beneath their pop hooks.
