You don't get the 2000 underground house classic "Qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" without a direct line to the Belgian techno scene and a Roland TB-303 running hot in a Brussels studio. Fabrice Lig was already a respected purveyor of high-grade techno when he linked up with Brandy for this one-off project under the moniker The Amazing. Released on the legendary French label F Communications, the record bypassed the standard filter-house tricks of the era in favor of something much leaner, dirtier, and more hypnotic. It is a massive shame they only left behind a single release because the chemistry between Lig's clinical, Detroit-influenced sequencing and Brandy's vocal presence was immediate. They did not stick around to cash in on the late-90s French Touch gold rush or tour the European superclub circuit. Instead, the record became a prized secret weapon for deep-crate DJs who wanted to bridge the gap between soulful house swing and cold, warehouse-ready techno. A true one-and-done masterclass in restraint.

  1. The F Communications Alliance

    In 2000, Fabrice Lig and Brandy stepped into the studio to record "Qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" for Laurent Garnier's tastemaker imprint F Communications. Lig brought his signature high-tech soul production style, utilizing hardware sequencers and analog synths to craft a driving, hypnotic groove. The track stood out on the label's roster by rejecting the glossy, commercial house trends of the turn of the millennium. It remains their sole collaborative statement, capturing a fleeting moment where Brussels techno grit met Parisian club sophistication.

  • Derrick May — Fabrice Lig has repeatedly cited the high-tech soul of Detroit's first wave as his primary sonic blueprint. You can hear this in the syncopated synth patterns and futuristic urgency of "Qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" which directly mimics the driving energy of May's classic Transmat releases.
  • Laurent Garnier — Garnier did not just sign the duo to his F Communications label; his eclectic, marathon DJ sets directly modeled how to blend deep house with hard techno. That exact genre-blurring philosophy is baked into the DNA of the track's structure. The arrangement is built to transition seamlessly between diverse club styles.
  • Model 500 — Juan Atkins' pioneering electro-techno project provided the template for using analog machinery to create soulful, alien soundscapes. The icy, mechanical bassline running through "Qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" is a direct descendant of the classic Metroplex Records sound. It keeps the track grounded in pure machine funk.
  • Lil' Louis — The sensual vocal delivery and hypnotic, late-night tension of "Qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" owes a massive debt to the Chicago house classic "French Kiss." The track uses vocal dynamics and repetitive, building tension in a way that mirrors Lil' Louis' legendary club arrangements. It is house music stripped down to its bare essentials.
  • LFO — The heavy, sub-bass frequencies and minimalist bleep techno aesthetics of Sheffield's Warp Records stable heavily influenced Lig's early production work.
