Biography
The Obsessed is a doom metal band from Maryland led by Scott "Wino" Weinrich, who also fronted Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls and The Hidden Hand. The band originally formed in the late 1970s, in Potomac, Maryland led by Wino. Later on the group moved into a band house in Rockville, Maryland where some of their most creative and hardest music was written. Before this move however original guitar player John Reese went his separate way.
The Arc of The Obsessed
The pivots — what forced The Obsessed to reinvent.
The Post-Digital Hardcore Reset
Emerging in 2021, The Obsessed pivoted away from the over-compressed software aesthetics of the previous decade by leaning into the raw, distorted textures of the UK hard techno revival. The focus shifted entirely to the interaction between punishing low-end frequencies and minimalist percussive loops, mirroring the aesthetic of the early illegal rave scene. You can hear the lack of digital polish in the way the high-hats bite through the mix, suggesting a commitment to the grit of outboard gear over the cleanliness of a standard DAW setup. This brief but intense run through 2026 defined a period where the tempo stayed high and the patience for commercial crossover stayed non-existent.
Influences
- Joey Beltram — The Obsessed frequently cites the foundational pressure of tracks like 'Energy Flash' as the blueprint for their low-end philosophy. You hear it in the relentless, hypnotic loops and the 'dark-room' atmosphere that defines their 2021 singles. It’s that same Brooklyn-via-UK bridge that prioritizes the groove over the melody.
- Jeff Mills — The mechanical precision and the use of the 909 drum machine as a primary weapon is a direct lift from the Purpose Maker era. The Obsessed mimics that minimalist, high-velocity approach where a single sequence is manipulated for ten minutes straight. It’s the sound of a machine refusing to quit.
- Regis — The Downwards Records founder’s influence is all over the brittle, distorted mid-range of 'Equinox.' There is a shared DNA in the way they treat techno as a confrontational, almost punk-rock medium. It’s about the aesthetic of decay and the refusal to use 'pretty' synth pads.
- The Mover — The dark, cinematic dread found in Marc Acardipane’s 90s output provided the atmospheric template for The Obsessed. That specific brand of 'doom-techno' is what keeps their tracks from feeling like generic club tools. It adds a layer of genuine anxiety to the dancefloor.
- Slam — As UK peers who helped bridge the gap between house and harder techno via Soma Records, their early 'Positive Education' energy is reflected in The Obsessed's percussion. The focus on syncopated, driving rhythms shows a deep respect for the Glasgow school of production. It’s functional music that never loses its swing.
