Biography
The Shirts were, and are, about Brooklyn, NY just as the Ramones were about Queens. They are about neighborhood, street-level family. Back in 1972, Robert Racioppo and Artie Lamonica were concerned to 'carve out our own culture' in Sunset Park, and were the Shirts' acorn. Two years before, Artie had played drums (his first time) with Bob in a free outdoor concert in Sunset Park organized by an earnest, idealistic teen: Ronnie Ardito. Also that summer

The CBGB Residency
Between 1975 and 1977, the band practically lived on the Bowery stage, sharing bills with Talking Heads and the Ramones. This era was defined by raw, guitar-driven energy and Annie Golden's theater-trained vocals cutting through the club's notoriously muddy sound system. You can hear this frantic, unpolished power on the Live at CBGB compilation tracks. They were the house band that everyone saw but major labels ignored because they didn't fit the standard punk template.
The Mike Thorne Era
In 1978, EMI put them on the Harvest imprint and paired them with producer Mike Thorne, who was fresh off working with Wire. Thorne tried to balance their Brooklyn bar-band muscle with art-rock studio polish, resulting in their self-titled debut and Street Light Shine. The guitars got cleaner, the keyboards became prominent, and the arrangements grew more complex. It gave them European hits like 'Tell Me Your Plans,' but it distanced them from the gritty Bowery scene that birthed them.
The Inner Sleeve Fall
By 1980, the label pressure to deliver a massive US radio hit culminated in Inner Sleeve. The production got slicker, the tempos slowed down, and the band's street-level identity got swallowed by corporate rock expectations. Tensions over songwriting duties and the label's focus on Golden as a solo star fractured the group. The album tanked, the label dropped them, and the original run ended with a quiet whimper instead of a bang.

- The Who — The Shirts explicitly covered 'The Kids Are Alright' in their early live sets at CBGB. You hear Pete Townshend's power-chord dynamics in Artie La Monica's driving rhythm guitar work. It gave their street-level pop a heavier, mod-rock backbone.
- The Shangri-Las — Annie Golden frequently cited girl groups of the sixties as her vocal blueprint. The dramatic, spoken-word intros and street-corner attitude on tracks like 'Poe' draw directly from Mary Weiss's melodramatic vocal delivery. It is the secret weapon that kept them from sounding like a generic pub-rock band.

- Jefferson Airplane — The dual-vocal dynamic between Annie Golden and Ronald Ardito was modeled on the Grace Slick and Marty Balin hand-offs. On tracks like 'Lonely, Too,' the vocal interplay mimics the psychedelic folk-rock arrangements of late-sixties San Francisco. It added a theatrical, bi-coastal layer to their East Coast punk-adjacent sound.
- The Beatles — The band's focus on three-part vocal harmonies was a direct attempt to replicate Abbey Road-era vocal stacks.
