Biography
Total Babes is Chris Brown, Gary Spolarich and Cloud Nothings' members Jayson Gerycz and Joe Boyer. The band is part of the Adventure Management music collective in Medina, OH. Old Flame Records and Continental Mind are pleased to announce the release of Swimming Through Sunlight, the debut full-length from Cleveland lo-fi rockers Total Babes on August 30, 2011.

The Basement Blast
In 2011, Swimming Through Sunlight showed up as an all-out sprint of blown-out distortion and sharp pop melodies. Christopher A. Brown tracked songs that sounded like they were fighting their way out of a blown amplifier. The record refuses to breathe, stacking buzzsaw guitars on top of vocal harmonies buried beneath three layers of mud. It proved you could write bulletproof power-pop hooks without cleaning up a single drop of sludge.
The Leaner Punch
Four years later, 2015 brought Heydays with a tighter grip on the steering wheel. The fuzz stayed heavy, but the arrangements opened up just enough to let the rhythm section drive the bus. The songs stretched out, exchanging frantic thrash for mid-tempo muscle and more deliberate structures. It was a mature step that still had dirt under its fingernails, right before the project went cold.
Influences
- Guided by Voices — Robert Pollard's Dayton crew wrote the handbook for combining brilliant pop songcraft with four-track tape hiss. You hear it immediately in the jagged, two-minute verse-chorus explosions across Swimming Through Sunlight. Ohio bands simply cannot escape this DNA, and Total Babes wore it on their sleeves.
- Husker Du — Bob Mould and Grant Hart pioneered the exact wall of screaming guitar noise wrapped around pristine melodic cores. That high-frequency fuzz wash coats every single hook on Heydays. It is the gold standard for making aggression sound sweet.
- The Replacements — Paul Westerberg made an art of sloppy, heart-on-sleeve rock and roll that sounded perpetually on the verge of falling apart. The reckless, loose-string energy in Christopher A. Brown's rhythm guitar work mirrors the Twin/Tone era down to the bone. If you don't hear Let It Be in those changes, you aren't listening.
- Superchunk — Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance built a whole indie empire on relentless, caffeinated downstrokes and soaring choruses. The fast tempos and driving bass lines all over Total Babes' debut pull directly from that 1990s Chapel Hill playbook. It hits with the exact same scrappy urgency.
- Teenage Fanclub — Bandwagonesque proved you could dime the Big Muff pedals and still write gorgeous, Byrds-style vocal harmonies. Total Babes took that exact dynamic and sped it up for the basement circuit. You hear the Scottish power-pop lineage hiding just under the blown-out speakers.
