Biography
English guitarist and songwriter, founding member of Showaddywaddy.
Born September 9, 1946, in Leicester, England.
Died February 18, 2026.
A sheet metal worker by trade, he played in the Leicester band Choise, which merged with the Golden Hammers in 1973 to form Showaddywaddy. He remained with the group throughout its career and was, alongside Dave Bartram, one of its principal songwriters. The band's own compositions were credited to all eight members, but were written mainly by Oakes and Bartram, with Al James contributing a handful. On stage he also played saxophone. He played his last concert with the band in December 2008 at the Cheese & Grain in Frome, Somerset, and formally retired on May 1, 2009, for health reasons. He then moved to Devon, where he continued to play on the local pub scene, before withdrawing from music and returning to Leicester.
