Twenty years in big tech — Google, Zappos, the absolute works — building ecommerce, receiving systems, and all things digital that scaled to billions of users. The whole time, the part of my week I actually looked forward to was Saturday at the local shop. I built the consumer side of gatefold.fm because nobody had built the second-screen tool a 600-record collection deserves.
But the apps and tools the shops use? Square doesn't have a clue what a pressing is. Discogs treats sellers like a feature, not a customer. Shopify is a brilliant platform but more than most indie shops want to maintain. Shops have been stuck choosing between three half-fits for fifteen years — and nobody who actually loves records had built the missing piece.
