Biography
Álvaro Leon Cassuto (European Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈaɫvɐɾu kɐˈsutu]; 17 November 1938 – 6 April 2026) was a Portuguese composer and conductor, regarded as one of Portugal's leading conductors. He was music director of the Portuguese Radio Symphony from 1975 to 1987, and of American orchestras. He founded and conducted the Nova Filarmonia Portuguesa and the Algarve Orchestra. He internationally promoted music by Portuguese composers, recording for example the complete symphonies of Joly Braga Santos.
