It is the band's first album of new material in 19 years and their first since reuniting in 2016. The album was produced by lead singer Kazuya Yoshii, who also wrote almost all of the songs. 9999 was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 3 on both the Oricon Albums Chart and Billboard Japan's Hot Albums chart and winning several awards. An expanded version of the album, titled 9999+1, was released on December 4, 2019, and reached numbers 2 and 4 on the charts.
