Biography
Andrew Clay Silverstein (born September 29, 1957), known professionally as Andrew Dice Clay, is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He rose to prominence in the late 1980s through "The Diceman", a leather-jacketed, hypermasculine stage persona whose profane nursery rhymes and routines about sex, gender, and ethnicity attracted both a large audience and widespread criticism. Contemporary critics and advocacy groups frequently described the material as misogynistic and homophobic; Clay maintained that the character was an exaggerated performance distinct from his private personality. In February 1990, Clay became the first stand-up comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden on two consecutive nights. His first comedy album, Dice (1989), was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, and The Day the Laughter Died (1990) reached the top 40 of the Billboard 200. That year he hosted a controversial episode of Saturday Night Live and starred in the comedy-mystery film The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Clay later received praise for supporting performances in Blue Jasmine (2013) and A Star Is Born (2018). The cast of A Star Is Born, including Clay, was nominated for the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the Showtime comedy series Dice, which ran for two seasons from 2016 to 2017. His later roles include the miniseries Pam & Tommy (2022), the sports drama Warrior Strong (2023), and the action comedy The Pickup (2025).
