Biography
Showing the Discogs bio
American stage actress, playwright, producer and lyricist.
Born January 28, 1876 in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Died January 3, 1928 (aged 51) in New York City, USA.
Donnelly made famous the play Madame X on the Broadway stage in 1910 and in a 1916 silent film, the first filming of the story. Long forgotten, she is the subject of a 1999 book by Lorraine McLean Dorothy Donnelly: A Life in the Theatre.
Donnelly began acting on Broadway in 1901. Her first big hit on Broadway was Blossom Time in 1921, for which she wrote the stage scores. The show ran for over 500 performances and was revived five times over the next 22 years. Her last Broadway hit was My Maryland in 1927.
As a songwriter, she is known for "Silver Moon", "Deep In My Heart, Dear" and "Mother". Her chief musical collaborators included Sigmund Romberg, Stephen Jones and Arthur Samuels (the latter two of whom she co-wrote the songs for 1924's "Poppy".
Donnelly's parents were Thomas Lester Donnelly, manager of the Grand Opera House in New York, and his wife Sarah (nee Williams). Donnelly attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York.
