Austro-Hungarian playwright and librettist of operettas, born 25 March 1861 in Lemberg, Galicia (now Lviv, Ukraine) – died 28 July 1921 in Vienna, Austria.
He wrote libretti for Johann Strauss Jr., Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, and Oskar Nedbal.
Together with Viktor Léon, Stein contributed the libretto for "Wiener Blut" ("Viennese Blood," 1899), an operetta that featured music by Johann Strauss Jr. arranged by Adolf Müller and to Franz Lehár's "Der Rastelbinder" (1902), "Der Göttergatte" (1904), and, most importantly, "Die lustige Witwe" ("The Merry Widow," 1905).
With Alfred Willner (opens in a new tab) and Robert Bodanzky, Stein wrote the libretto for another Lehár hit, "Der Graf von Luxemburg" ("The Count of Luxembourg," 1909). With Bela Jenbach, Stein collaborated on the libretto for Emmerich Kálmán's hit operetta "Die Csárdásfürstin" ("The Gypsy Princess," 1915).
Stein is buried in the old Jewish section of Vienna's Zentralfriedhof (group 53B, row 282, nr. 38).
