The Clerk's read on this shelf

This shelf runs heavy on 70s rock and sun-baked southern geography, led by sixteen Jimmy Buffett records and ten from Little Feat that anchor the whole room in a permanent haze of grease and humidity. The numbers don't lie about the decade split either, with the seventies taking seventy-eight entries while the 2020s claw right back up with seventy-three, proving this collector doesn't just live in the past even if the Little Feat run from 1971 to 1981 does heavy lifting. You've got Bill Payne and Richie Hayward pulsing through fourteen records each in the fine print, which means the rhythm section is essentially running the store whether you put them on the turntable or not. It's a collection built by someone who wants warmth and movement above all else, swinging easily from Charley Crockett's modern country stride back to Robert Palmer and back again without a stutter in the pacing. Sure, there are missing pieces in the spans—Time Loves A Hero is sitting there as a glaring one-album hole for Little Feat, and Buffett is missing Rancho Deluxe, Last Mango In Paris, and Floridays. But that just keeps the hunt alive in the dollar bins downstairs while the rest of the room stays stacked. Solid weight across one hundred forty-two artists who clearly know how to keep a groove going for thirty minutes at a stretch.

The Clerk's take

The roast

Sixteen Jimmy Buffett records deep.

Sixteen Buffett albums and three missing right out of the middle — Rancho Deluxe, Last Mango In Paris, Floridays. That's not a gap, that's just leaving the blender running in the kitchen while you walk to the beach. You've got the whole Key West pipeline laid out except for the three you must have left in a damp cooler.

Today's read

Rod Stewart's Alternate Atlantic Crossing.

Fred Tackett's guitar work is stamped across twelve other records on this shelf, and Trevor Horn's production fingerprints sit on seven more. It is warm, smoky swagger built by guys who knew how to turn a studio into a saloon.

The win

The 1970s dominate this shelf.

Seventy-eight records from the seventies holding down the top spot with the twenties right behind them at seventy-three. Fourteen Buffett albums from A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean to Off To The Lizard. That's a real span.

Buried treasure

Ralph Stanley hasn't seen a needle yet.

Ralph Stanley — Something Old - Something New & Some Of Katy's Mountain Dew

Something Old Something New & Some Of Katy's Mountain Dew has sat on the shelf for four months with zero plays and a single Gatefold owner on the network. Twangy, pastoral, celebratory. Stop looking at it and spin this tonight.
