About
<i>Weasels Ripped My Flesh</i> was the second collection released in 1970, featuring the recently disbanded original line-up of The Mothers of Invention. Unlike its predecessor, the largely studio-based <i>Burnt Weeny Sandwich</i>, <i>Weasels</i> includes a larger helping of live performances alongside the studio work. The vocal numbers make for near conventional listening, especially the inspired R&B jam behind Don "Sugarcane" Harris on Little Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You," while the pure instrumental pieces get plenty weird. "Didja Get Any Onya?," recorded live at the Philadelphia Arena, filters Zappa's modern classical interests through his own bizarre sense of humor and dynamics. The "Prelude To The Afternoon of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask," recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in London, breaks down into barbaric wails and perverted mating calls. "Get A Little," performed at Andy Warhol's Factory, coalesces into a mesmerizing wah-pedal delight. Be forewarned, the title track features droning noise, feedback and eventually applause.
