Biography
Gospel-oriented close harmony ensemble. Formed in 1930 in Ohio. Worked frequently with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. The group also made appearances in motion pictures and toured in the musical revue Hellzapoppin'. Lead singer Billy Williams left the group for a better record deal in 1950. Part of that deal was to ditch The Charioteers, and he created the Billy Williams Quartet to replace it. After his departure, the group failed to remain successful and quit in 1957.
