Twenty years in big tech — Google, Zappos, the lot — building ecommerce, receiving systems, and all things digital that scaled to billions of users. The whole time, the only part of my week I gave a feck about was Saturday at the local shop. I built the consumer side of gatefold.fm because nobody had built the second-screen tool a 600-record collection deserves, like.
But the apps and tools the shops use? Square doesn't know a pressing from a potato. Discogs treats sellers like a feature, not a customer. Shopify is a grand platform but it's fierce heavy for most indie shops to maintain. Shops have been stuck choosing between three half-arsed fits for fifteen years — and nobody who actually loves records had built the missing piece, sure look.
