Atlas: your shelf on a map

Atlas puts your shelf on a map: where your records were cut, where the artists are from, and where they worked. Pick a city, see which of your records are tied to it, then take exactly those records back to your Shelf. It's free on every tier.

How do I get to Atlas?

  • Kebab (3 dots) > Atlas, under Your collection. It used to be called Scenes.
  • Shelf > Atlas, beside the My Shelf heading. It brings your search and format tab along, so the map shows the same records the grid does.
  • Stats has an Atlas card once there's something to put on the map.
  • An artist page has an On the map section. When you own their records, Open on the map opens Atlas on that artist.

What does the map show?

Each pin is a place tied to records on your shelf in one of three ways:

  • Recorded in: the record was cut there.
  • From: the artist was born or formed there.
  • Active in: the artist worked there.

The line at the top shows how many of your records it could place, and in how many places. Records with no known place are left off, so the map counts fewer records than your shelf. Some "worked here" places come from research, not from a credit. Atlas says so under the list.

What do Place means and Pins count do?

  • Place means picks which relationships the pins count: recorded in, from and active in. All three start on, and Atlas remembers the ones you change.
  • Pins count switches what a pin counts: Records, Artists, Genres or Decades.

What happens when I tap a city?

Tap a pin, or a place in the list under the map. On a phone a sheet slides up; on a wide screen it opens beside the map. The city sheet has:

  • How many records on your shelf are tied to that place and why, in words: "14 records on your shelf were cut here", or a split between cut here, by artists from here and by artists who worked here.
  • A breakdown list: the studios they were recorded in when only recorded in is on, otherwise the artists, genres or decades. Tap an artist, genre or decade row to see just those records on your Shelf.
  • Up to six covers. Tap one to open the album.
  • A Maps button for a town, which opens it in your maps app.
  • Open N records on the shelf, which takes you to your Shelf with exactly those records.

How does place: work?

Opening a city on the Shelf adds a place: search to your search box, so the Shelf lands on the same count the pin showed. You can type it yourself too, on the Shelf or in Atlas. place:Detroit is any tie. place:recorded in London, place:from Aberdeen and place:active in Berlin pick one kind. When two places share a name, add the country after a comma: place:from Paris, France.

If two places on your shelf share a name in the same country and region, the shelf can't tell them apart yet, and the sheet says so instead of offering the button. The prefixes for studios, plants and credits are in Search by credits, studios, plants and places.

Yes. The search box works like the one on your Shelf. Type artist:, genre: or decade: and the map narrows as you type. place:Detroit finds Detroit records on the Shelf too. The decade scrubber under the map writes decade: into the box for you.

Can I see one artist's places?

Tap Artist and pick a name. The map shows only their places, with a note on each pin.

What's Their world?

With an artist picked, turn on Their world to add every band that shares a member with them, marked by whether you own it. An artist page's On the map section has the same switch.
