What works offline
Your shelf is saved on your device too, so you can look through it in a basement record store with no signal. Here's what works and what waits for a connection.
What works without a connection?
- Your Shelf, with the covers you've already seen.
- Search and the format tabs.
genre:andlabel:searches. They give the same results offline as online.- Your Want list.
- Scanning the barcode of a record you already own. It says Found on your shelf (offline).
While you're offline the menu only shows Shelf and Want, with an Offline chip.
What if I open the app with no signal?
In the iPhone and Android apps, Gatefold opens a saved copy of your shelf with an Offline badge, a search box (artist, album, catalog number) and the All, Vinyl, CD and Cassette tabs. It keeps trying to reconnect and goes back to the full app when it can.
It can only show what it saved. If you've never opened Gatefold on that phone with a connection, or you're signed out, there's nothing saved yet: sign in and connect once.
Does it work in a browser?
Mostly. A browser keeps a copy of your shelf, the pages you've opened, and up to 6,000 covers you've already seen. A page it never saved sends you back to your Shelf.
Which searches need a connection?
Searches on people and places ask the server: credit:, producer:, engineer:, mixed:, master:, tag:, studio:, plant: and place:. Offline those come back wider than you asked, not empty, so don't trust that count until you're back online.
Can I keep every cover on my phone?
Yes. Kebab (3 dots) > Settings > Offline Mode > Store all covers on this device. It shows how many are stored, with Download now, Stop and Clear stored covers. It downloads on its own over Wi-Fi only; Download now uses cellular too. It's in the iPhone and Android apps; a desktop browser doesn't show this card.
Going somewhere without signal? Tap Sync Now on the same card before you leave.
What needs a connection?
- The Clerk. The chat box says You're offline.
- Syncing. Sync Now is greyed out.
- Adding a record you don't own yet. A barcode says you'll be able to add it once you're back online.
- Concert and new-release lookups.
- An album's tracklist and credits. The saved shelf has what the grid and filters need, not the whole album page.
Is offline MOSH only?
No. Offline works on every account.
