Biography

Jack Johnson tracked Brushfire Fairytales with J.P. Plunier on a shoestring budget before anyone cared about a pro surfer with an acoustic guitar. He wasn't some industry plant. He was a film student who realized people liked his soundtracks more than his cinematography. The early stuff worked because it was skeletal—just a man, a drum kit, and a bass player trying not to wake up the neighbors. It was stripped-back folk that somehow survived the post-grunge hangover without sounding like a total fraud. Then things got heavy in the bank account and light in the writing. By the time he was doing the Curious George soundtrack, he’d become the official background music for every upscale juice bar in the Western world. He survived that lull by leaning into the analog warmth of his own Brushfire Studio, occasionally shaking off the sunshine for something with a bit of grit. Lately, he’s been smart enough to let outsiders like Blake Mills or Hermanos Gutiérrez into the room to keep the sound from curdling into pure comfort food.
