The Clerk in other languages

The Clerk writes and talks in 23 language settings, and a lot of them come with a regional voice, from Scottish to Kiwi.

Where do I set it?

Kebab (3 dots) > Settings > Language & Region > Language.

Which languages?

  • English: US, UK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
  • French: France, Québec, or plain French.
  • Spanish: Spain, Latin America, or plain Spanish.
  • Portuguese: Brazil, Portugal, or plain Portuguese.
  • German, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Japanese and Korean.

What's a regional voice?

Pick a regional setting and the Clerk talks like he's from there, slang included: Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English, Canadian, Québécois (with franglais), Australian, New Zealand, Castilian or Latin American Spanish, Brazilian or European Portuguese, French from France, German, Japanese and Korean. Italian, Polish and Dutch don't have one yet.

Leave it on English (US) and he goes by your saved location: Ireland and Northern Ireland get the Irish voice, Scotland and Wales get theirs, the rest of the UK gets English, Québec gets Québécois and the rest of Canada Canadian, and Australia and New Zealand get theirs. Plain Spanish, Portuguese or French pick the regional voice from your saved country too.

Does chat follow it?

Yes. Clerk chat answers in your language, and so do his pieces in Collection Stats. Artist, album and song names are never translated.

Does his speaking voice follow it?

Yes. US English keeps his usual voice; any other setting switches to a voice for that language. UK, Scotland, Ireland and Wales speak with a British accent, Australia and New Zealand with an Australian one. Québec speaks Canadian French and Spain Castilian Spanish.

Two gaps: English (Canada) speaks US English, and Portuguese (Portugal) is spoken in Brazilian Portuguese because there's no European Portuguese voice yet.

Can I talk to him in my language?

This is the confusing part. What he says follows your Gatefold setting. What he hears depends on where you are:

  • Talking to him on the phone, and in Driving Mode: he listens for US English, whatever your setting.
  • CarPlay: he listens in your iPhone's language (iPhone Settings > General > Language & Region), and answers in your Gatefold language. An English iPhone with Gatefold set to Français (Québec) means you talk to him in English and he answers in Québec French. To talk to him in French, set the iPhone to French too. If your iPhone's language has no speech recognition, he listens for US English.

No. Buttons and menus stay in English. The language setting changes what the Clerk writes and says.
